Marvel Universe: A Binge-Worthy Journey

 

We have all grown up watching Marvel movies. With every movie, we became more part of the MCU (Marvel Comic Universe). Everyone has their favorite movies, scenes, and superheroes. So whether you’re an adherent Marvel fan, or just getting on the Marvel bandwagon (about time!) this article takes you through each of the 22 movies, in chronological order (of release). Let the binge-watching marathon begin!

1. Iron Man (2008):

What’s it about: Iron Man showcases the story of Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist, and genius inventor, conducting weapons tests overseas, who gets kidnapped by terrorists. These terrorists force him to build a devastating weapon, using his innovation and intelligence. Stark builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity; which he later uses to protect the world as Iron Man against a diabolical plot with global implications.

2. The Incredible Hulk (2008):

What’s it about: Bruce Banner and Betty Ross are scientists working on making the body resistant to gamma rays. Something goes wrong, poisoning only Bruce. The film follows, Banner’s journey to find a cure to this radiation poisoning, that unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk; while struggling struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thunderbolt Ross that seeks to capture him and brutally exploit his power.

3. Iron Man 2 (2010):

What’s it about: With his superhero identity revealed, Tony Stark tries to balance the public and military’s heat to divulge the secrets of his armored suit and battle powerful enemies. Fearing the information, and technology will fall into the wrong hands and be abused, he forms new alliances with James Rhodes to protect his secrets and the world from the next formidable force threatening the world.

4. Thor (2011):

What’s it about: Thor, king of Norse gods, is cast out of Asgard by his father Odin, on the day he was to inherit the crown, as a consequence of his brutality against the Front Giants, violating their peace agreement. Thor is banished for his arrogance and is sent to Earth to live among humans. On Earth, Thor loses his godly powers, falls in love with scientist Jane Foster, and faces great inter-dimensional evil, thanks to Loki. Loki creates havoc in Asgard as well.

5. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011):

What’s it about: Steve Rogers, a military soldier, volunteers to participate in the experimental program that turns him into a super-soldier known today as Captain America. As Captain America, he teams up with Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter to wage war on the evil HYDRA organization, led by the warmonger Red Skull.

6. The Avengers (2012):

What’s it about: When an alien army led by the mischievous Loki emerges to threaten global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., forms a team of Earth’s mightiest heroes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, The Incredible Hulk, and Black Widow. This team, popularly known as The Avengers, fights together to stop Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

7. Iron Man 3 (2013):

What’s it about: The movie picks up right after the intergalactic events of The Avengers. Stark remains severely haunted by this experience, and his stress, causes him to overwork, straining his relationship with Pepper Potts and causing panic attacks. When the terrorist, The Mandarin hijacks the airwaves and threatens America, Tony teams up with Col. James Rhodes and a young boy named Harley, to take down the Mandarin.

8. Thor: The Dark World (2013):

What’s it about: In ancient times, the Gods of Asgard, successfully neutralized, the Dark Elves and their catastrophic weapon, the Aether. Several years later, Jane Foster accidentally comes in contact with the Aether, becomes its host, and unknowingly awakens the evil Malekith and his Dark Elf army. The film follows Thor forming an uneasy alliance with Loki to try and stop Malekith from using the weapon to destroy the Nine Realms, including Earth.

9. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014):

What’s it about: Steve Rogers still adjusting to the new world, faces a new unknown threat named the Winter Soldier. The movie follows Captain America’s suggestive disobedience against S.H.E.I.L.D and uncovering the truth about the Winter Soldier, with allies like The Black Widow, and The Falcon. As the trio unravels this mystery of mysteries, the identity of the Winter Soldier turns out to be surprising and traumatic for Captain America.

10. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014):

What’s it about: Peter Quill was kidnapped by aliens when he was young and is now a space hopper traversing the world to find objects to resell. During his space wheeling, he comes into possession of a precious silver orb, which seems more desired for its mystical powers than its financial value. The movie follows a galactic battle royale between Quill, his friends, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket; and Ronan the Accuser and his cronies, who work for the mad Titan, Thanos.

11. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015):

What’s it about: While The Avengers are working hard to finish off HYDRA, Tony Stark’s program Ultron, turns on its master. Ultron, assisted by the superpowers of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, wants to save the earth by exterminating the human population. The movie follows earth’s greatest superheroes’ fight to save humanity going the way of dinosaurs from the meteorite-like destruction by Ultron and his friends.

12. Ant-Man (2015):

What’s it about: Scott Lang can shrink to any size and his strength is inversely proportional to his size. Smaller makes him stronger! Initially a con man, Lang upgrades in life saving the world through a heist of epic proportions, with support from his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym. The Ant-Man plays a key role in the dramatic arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, which culminates in Avengers: Endgame.

13. Captain America: Civil War (2016):

What’s it about: Tony Stark and Steve Rogers go head-to-head in an epic battle of wills as the newly brought Hero Registration Act approved by the Government split earth’s mighty warriors. While Tony agrees with the restrictions placed by the act, Captain America finds reliance on the Government dangerous in terms of saving the world. As the disagreement escalates into an all-out civil war between our superheroes, a new threat emerges to try to take advantage.

14. Doctor Strange (2016):

What’s it about: A tragic car accident turns Doctor Stephen Strange, a brilliant neurosurgeon life upside down. To heal, he becomes a student of the secret field of mysticism, alternate realities and dimensions, and the control of space and time, taught by the Ancient One. These newly acquired metaphysical abilities go on to make him one of the most powerful and wise members of the Avengers as he brings his unique powers to good use to protect the earth.

15. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017):

What’s it about: After saving Xandar, and being officially christened as Guardians of the Galaxy, the team travels to an unknown planet where they meet Ego – Peter’s father. Here Peter discovers him being half Celestial, an ancient creature of legend with gargantuan powers and the potential to be immortal. The film follows an epic battle to save the universe, uncovering the horrific secret to the immortality of the Celestials, and the truth behind the fate of Peter’s mother.

16. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017):

What’s it about: Trying, and failing to live a normal life Peter Parker, helps anyone he can as the friendly neighborhood superhero. Under his new mentor Tony Stark, Peter puts his powers as Spider-Man to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear. The film follows a battle of monstrous proportions between good and evil.

17. Thor: Ragnarok (2017):

What’s it about: The demon Surtur prophesied the destruction of Asgard in the apocalyptic Ragnarok. Thor discovers his father Odin is missing from Asgard and his brother Loki is reigning in his place in disguise. The two brothers, go to Norway, only to watch him die, which releases their unknown sister Hela, from her prison. The film follows Thor and Loki’s fight against Hela, who wants to destroy Asgard while preventing Ragnarok amidst all this confusion.

18. Black Panther (2018):

What’s it about: The story revolves around the journey of T’Challa’s rise to the throne, in the nation of Wakanda. While they claim to be a third-world nation, Wakanda in reality is a technological superpower, created by using vibranium, the strongest metal in the universe, from a meteorite. The legend of the Black Panther, arose when one warrior ingested a heart-shaped herb affected by the vibranium and was bestowed with super-human powers.

19. Avengers: Infinity War (2018):

What’s it about: Spread across the nine realms, Thanos gains each of the six infinity stones, one by one. Epic battles to stop him, take place in Asgard, Earth (including Wakanda), Titan, and Vormir. Despite the Avengers’ best efforts, Thanos snaps his fingers and destroys half of the universe, which includes some prominent members of the Avengers team as well.

20. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018):

What’s it about: Scott Lang tries to come to terms with his dual life as an Avenger and a father. As Scott tries to find an equilibrium between his responsibilities towards his daughter and his new superhero job as Ant-Man, his mentor, Dr. Pym, and Hope van Dyne give him an urgent new mission. Lang must again be Ant-Man and unlock some hidden stories from the past. And this time he has a new partner: The Wasp!

21. Captain Marvel (2019):

What’s it about: Set in the 1990s, the film follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes so far; caught in the middle of an inter-galactic war between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls. With help from S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury, Danvers sets out to unravel the truth about her time on Earth and how she came to be this powerful.

22. Avengers: Endgame (2019):

What’s it about: Five years after Thanos’s killed half of the universe, the remainder of the Avengers, pull off a time heist with Ant-Man, bringing back the infinity stones to undo the damage done by Thanos. While they succeed, Thanos manages to catch up to them and the biggest battle possible follows. Every MCU character is given screen time and the story has been holistically covered along with a justified climax.

This Marvel Studios’ epic series of interconnected superhero adventures runs a little over 48 hours in total run time, and may even cross that line when necessary breaks are factored in! (But it’s worth it, I promise!!)
