Mortal Kombat: A Review

I admit I was really hoping to see this one in IMAX 3D if not 4DX, but alas, the second wave of Covid ruined my plans. Fortunately, thanks to its timely release online (on Popcorn time) I caught the film last night.

Nowhere in its 2-hour run time, did I feel the need to pick up my mobile (I have a habit of playing games while watching movies). Engaging from the very beginning, this martial arts fantasy film is the best one, of the franchise so far. Despite its predecessors, all bombing the box office between 1995 and 2020, this latest flick based on the video game franchise of the same name, was full start-to-finish fantastic. This isn’t just my perspective, the global critics and audience concur. In spite of being released during a pandemic (23rd April 2021), the producers have already recovered their budget of $55 million, and made $66 million worldwide!

Even if you never played the game, I didn’t, with little to no background required, the film is a standalone entertainer. Unlike a lot of the multi-lingual films I have watched in the past couple of years, fortunately, the Japanese and Chinese bits were properly translated and presented as English subtitles. The action sequences are brilliant, the dialogues are crisp (no mumbling) and the cinematography is brilliant. The only aspect which didn’t sit quite well with me was the blood, there seems to be just too much of it being spilled, throughout the film. Irrespectively, if you’re looking for an action film to watch, this is what you can justify your weekend binge with.

Have fun, and let me know in the comments section below, how you liked the film.
